Photos like this always make me think of Julia Dexter saying, “NICE BRAID” in a leering and hilarious voice.

“Last night I was putting some salt on my dinner and thinking about how much I love salt. I wonder who first thought to put it on food, I wondered. Then I thought about how cool it might be to go inside a salt mine. I remember as a kid reading about ones with amazing sculptures and carved castles made of salt! Then I realized in reality they probably have terrible labor conditions and are awful and depressing. We call this a “killjoy of the self.””

How to Toast

a piece of toast

As part of my commitment to toast, and because my oven is broken, I bought a toaster oven.

YOU GUYS, IT’S AMAZING.

1. It has a crumb tray.

2. It has a Toast Shade Selector.

3. “When making more than one batch of toast the toast shade selector should be set to a lighter color on the second batch to get the same shade as the first.”

4. The Function/Temperature Knob has these options: 200°, 250°, 300°, 350°, 400°, 450°, Broil, and then a little drawing of a piece of toast.

5. Toast is ten times better if you get a little “ding!” instead of just checking the regular oven to see if it’s done.

6. The Spanish for “Toaster Oven” is “Horno Eléctrico,” which is funny because I am 5.

“I don’t believe in charity. I believe in solidarity. Charity is vertical, so it’s humiliating. It goes from the top to the bottom. Solidarity is horizontal. It respects the other and learns from the other. I have a lot to learn from other people.”
