“I think of Bertha’s violence as part of a genealogy of feminist rage – from Valerie Solanas (“If SCUM ever strikes, it will be in the dark with a six-inch blade”) to Lorena Bobbit – and Jane, too, another woman who refuses to be silent and disappear. Re-reading Jane Eyre after all this time, I’m reminded of a bitchy thing Susan Sontag once said about Adrienne Rich, calling her a “phenomenologist of anger.” That was in 1975, in the New York Review of Books, two years after Rich published “Jane Eyre: The Temptation of a Motherless Woman” in Ms. Magazine. Sontag resented Rich’s overvaluation of emotion, and of course, her explicit feminism.” Sontag also famously said: “Like all capital moral truths, feminism is a bit simple minded.””

Turning Cursive Letters Into Knives

believeinthefight:

I will start off the New Year by re-reading The Bell Jar, then maybe who knows.  Starting off a new year is always exciting because of books.

The Sylvia Plath story is told to girls who write / They want us to think that to be a girl poet means you have to die. / Who is it that told me all girls who write must suicide? / I’ve another good one for you / we are turning cursive letters into knives.” - BK

Yes!! I am making a list of books to read and am forming a RL book group to go with Olympia one. I was getting sad thinking about how stupid I’ve become but various people reminded me that the Neurontin makes me absent minded (IRONIC) and also literally makes it hard to focus—they call it “abnormal accommodation.” I still need another pair of glasses to be able to read properly but I will get them soon. Slow moves.

orientaltiger:

Matej Kren installed a “tower of books” in the Prague Municipal Library which uses mirrors to create an illusion that you’re looking into an endless vortex of books.

So wait, it’s NOT a vagina?

Sometimes I just sit back and let it happen. V.O.D.

PS I don’t use tags except as occasional jokes, should I actually use them? Does my future archivist hate me?
