“At some point I am going to have to admit that still being able to pronounce words in Greek in no way means I remember what any of those words mean. But for today, I’m reading Euripides with the English on the left and the Greek on the right and feeling utterly fluent.”

“And if all that is meaningless, I want to be cured
Of a craving for something I cannot find
And of the shame of never finding it.”

Hall of Fame news and these guys both came up yesterday, and…

Hall of Fame news and these guys both came up yesterday, and now I see they were inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Online Hall of Fame this past June.  More importantly, on Dr. J’s blog (!), I read this fantastic story about two Beatles-obsessed Saginaw teens in the 1960s who, undeterred by a rejection of their zine by a New York publishing house (fuck them!) made a new plan:

They didn’t want to set limits on themselves and settle for the typical jobs offered to girls; they were interested in doing their thing, which at this time was being part of the music that they loved. So they hatched another creative scheme that, if successful, would in effect kill two birds with one stone. Their bold plan was to interview Saginaw’s most popular band, The Bossmen, write an article about them, and then present it to the Saginaw News.  The hope was that the paper would then hire them to write a music-related column every week.

It just gets better from there—they write the column, meet rock stars, and then retire just as they are graduating from high school. A local rock club gave them a party:

Who wants to collaborate with me on the screenplay?

(By contrast my writing career such as it is (or was) began when I wrote an incensed letter to the LA Times while in either junior high or high school denouncing Robert Hilburn’s obsession with male singer songwriters and furthermore Kristine McKenna’s complete misunderstanding of how “Decline of Western Civilization” was parental propaganda! I believe I also told them that if I could afford it I would get them both a subscription to FLipside to see what the world is really like, man. I got a lovely letter back from Ms. McKenna telling me that she had tried to get my letter published and that she thought I was a really good writer, which was pretty sporting of her.)

They are so close to their goal!

As part of the occupy America movement we need to show the world what we think the world can be like.  In my pretty rainbow world it involves viable incomes and beautiful lives in art, academia, dance, music and fun that aren’t only sanctioned by museums and venues and institutions…
Let’s show that we care
about the underground, the eccentric, the non-conforming and the people who give us a different perspective on what the world can look like even if we only visit it once every few years.
Please any donations you were thinking of gifting to Secret Project Robot parlay them to Rubulad for 2011 we will happily act as an umbrella organization if you are seeking a tax exemption…

Thank You So Much!
We really appreciate your support!

“I’m so happy to find my Christmas music did survive the crashes! I found it all on a random drive when I was looking for a movie file. Right now listening to The Band, “Christmas Must Be Tonight.” I’ll post them, maybe others will enjoy. Decoration-wise, keeping it low-key this year only one tree, one fake fireplace, 3 santas. So far.”

One of my favorite Christmas memories was walking home from…

One of the men had taken a hit

One of my favorite Christmas memories was walking home from Crystal’s house 4 or 5 years ago with Deann, and Jessica too, I think? We took a detour to see the gas station on Maujer that always has a huge giant display. I mean, like they have a ferris wheel full of snowmen. Much respect.

I crossed the street to walk home and saw a cadre of soldiers lying in the street! There was one or two in the gutter and the rest were nailed to a big board. Deann stood guard  while I asked the gas station guy if we could have them. He said yes, so I called Jens, who was living on Maujer then. He sent Jackie over with tools and we liberated those troops! They make me so happy every year when I unearth them. They used to spend the off-season at Matthew’s, because he had storage, but I’ve been cleaning out things enough that they live here now. These same soldiers are for sale at the junk shop down the street for like $20 each btw.

OK obviously I am totally going to decorate, who am I kidding. I just found my copy of “Christmas at Luke’s House” and three cans of snow! Come on over.
