on outperforming patriarchy

karaj:

“the feminist parasite engages performance as a way of derailing and rerouting patriarchal investments in reciprocity, generational gratitude, and the gift economy that have structured discourses of morality, as realized by way of compulsory constructions of femininity as congenial, gracious, and obliging, not to mention the project of feminism as one that would seek gender equality, rather than to posit an opposition that would seek to hyperbolize, and thus outperform, patriarchy…

parasitical performance iterates female stereotypes at a level of mania, while simultaneously claiming—or rather insisting (‘to be perfectly honest’)—that their performances bear some relationship to real life beyond the stage, effecting in this juxtaposition, a sense of disquietude or instability in the system. despite the often very apparent artificiality or hyperbole of their contrived spectacles, the artists’ refuse to break character, to let their ‘real meaning’ be finally pinned down…”

Can I just say

psychotropicpolitics:

that Rookie frequently blows my mind with the quality, thoughtfulness and just GENERALLY HELPFULNESS of the articles, like this one on why women shouldn’t fake orgasms. Which you know, isn’t the sort of thing they outright tell you in Seventeen so we should all be happy that at least some teenagers have Rookie instead.

Why You Shouldn’t Fake an Orgasm, gURL.com, November 1, 11

Faking Farewell, Scarleteen, March 8, 2011

I’m sure Rookie is great, but they aren’t the only ones out there—lots of people doing good work in the teen media. I’m actually 99% sure Seventeen has also run a story on why you shouldn’t fake an orgasm, they just don’t put most of the sex and health stuff up on their website. Also I think Rookie is mostly read by adults, but that’s just me.

“And then the line was quiet but not dead. I almost felt like he was there in my room with me, but in a way it was better, like I was not in my room and he was not in his, but instead we were together in some invisible and tenuous third space that could only be visited on the phone.”
