Sarah Palin’s hometown of Wasilla, Alaska, is back in the news — but not for anything the former vice presidential candidate has said or done. A public sculpture at the town’s high school is causing a ruckus for what some claim to see as a depiction of the female genitalia.

The artists, Jim Dault and Shala Dobson, are quoted in The Frontiersman describing  “Warrior Within” thusly:

The oblong shields, one made of aluminum and another of bronze, are emblazoned with warrior symbolism. Emerging from the powerful stone form are two warrior shields encircled by glowing feathers,” the description says, adding the art is a monument to the warrior spirit. “The bronze shield has a hand impression showing ‘good deeds.’ The aluminum shield has a flame symbol representing the ‘spark of inspiration.’ The stone form represents the strong material from which a warrior is made.”

Feminist art action in Toilets

Feminist art action in Toilets:

Interview with Sara S’Jegers about her project “Gender fact files f/m – m/f,” which involves putting stickers in public bathrooms questioning the gender divide. I love Sara’s work but it is hard to find info about it online—worth digging around if you are having a lazy day. Her Flickr is a good place to start. I’m not linking any images because it says all rights reserved and I want to respect that.
