"I miss God. I miss the company of someone utterly loyal. I still don’t think of God as my betrayer…."

“I miss God. I miss the company of someone utterly loyal. I still don’t think of God as my betrayer. The servants of God, yes, but servants by their very nature betray. I miss God who was my friend. I don’t even know if God exists, but I do know that if God is your emotional role model, very few human relationships will match up to it. I have an idea that one day it might be possible, I thought once it had become possible, and that glimpse has set me wandering, trying to find the balance between earth and sky. If the servants hadn’t rushed in and parted us, I might have been disappointed, might have snatched off the white samite to find a bowl of soup. As it is, I can’t settle, I want someone who is fierce and will love me until death and knows that love is as strong as death, and be on my side for ever and ever. I want someone who will destroy and be destroyed by me.”

“Can the hungry go on a hunger strike? Non-violence is a piece of theatre. You need an audience. What can you do when you have no audience? People have the right to resist annihilation.”

Derweze, also known as the door to hell, is a 70 meter wide hole in the middle of the Karakum desert in Turkmenistan. The hole was formed in 1971 when a team of soviet geologists had their drilling rig collapse when they hit a cavern filled with natural gas. In an attempt to avoid poisonous discharge, they decided to burn it off, thinking that the gas would be depleted in only a few days. Derweze is still burning today

svell:

Mathilde Roussel, Lifes of Grass. soil, wheat seeds, structure from recycled metal, fabric.

“The natural world, ingested as food becomes a component of human being. Through these anthropomorphic and organic sculptures made of soil and wheat grass seeds, I strive to show that food, it’s origin, it’s transport, has an impact on us beyond it’s taste. The power inside it affects every organ of our body. Observing nature and being aware of what and how we eat makes us more sensitive to food cycles in the world - of abundance, of famine - and allows us to be physically, intellectually and spiritually connected to a global reality.”

The bitter oyster, Panellus stipticus, glows in the dark. We know how but not why they glow.Kathie Hodge uses them as a nightlight.

(I must have watched this thing loop for like five minutes.)

Bitter Oyster is my new lifestyle all the way.

brilliantmistake: Sex gets even stranger for some barnacles….

brilliantmistake:

Sex gets even stranger for some barnacles. The barnacles in (b) and (d), top and bottom right, are like most barnacles, living in happy (I assume) clumps of hermaphrodites, sexing away with each other in reciprocal fashion.

The barnacle in (a) top left, is a lone hermaphrodite. For reproduction, it depends on wee little dwarf males, no bigger than a pinhead. The barnacle species in (d), bottom left, has separate males and females, one of the only barnacle species that does. Here all the males are dwarf, and only the female is large.

(from: Adaptive evolution of sexual systems in pedunculate barnacles)

And this doesn’t even get into the weirdness that is parasitic barnacles, who infect crabs. They take up residence in the female crab’s reproductive system and sterilize her. Then they take on the form of a crab egg sac, typically carried under the crabs abdomen, so the female crab cares for and protects the parasites as though they were her own young. If they infect a male crab, they not only sterilize him, they alter his behavior so that he behaves like a female, caring for a fake egg sac that is actually a breeding pair of parasites.

And now you all know why I would eat a thousand cows before I ate one fucking thing from the ocean.

anatomy of sea life

Reposting because my rage “THOSE ARE THE BARNACLE’S FEET” is tempered by excitement that my sister the marine biologist will deliver SCIENCE RAGE.

Oh, ha, even before I got to your comment I was all “Who cares about a stupid barnacle?!?!!1 THEMS FIGHTIN WERDS.”

Ahem …

  • Yes, the feet! They spend their adult life standing on their heads and kicking food into their mouths.
  • Hermaphrodites
  • Longest penis in relation to body size of any animal
  • Said penis is prehensile (video)
  • A new penis is grown every year
  • After reciprocal boning via their massive snakelike dongs, the young grow in the shell of their mother for weeks before drifting away with the currents.

Also, perhaps one should try diving to 300 ft and swimming at 20 mph before starting in with the fat shaming.
