Greenpoint Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry Needs Your Help

Dear Friends,

From the best of our knowledge, much of Greenpoint fared reasonably well during Hurricane Sandy. Parts of the neighborhood were underwater, but nothing like our neighbors to the north in Long Island City. We are very grateful that the building did not sustain significant damage and the basement remained dry. Because we did not have a sustained power outage, the food in freezers and refrigerators is good. Because we are in such good shape, we are focusing our resources on the storm recovery process.

We are responding to the storm in several specific ways, and can use your help.

1. We are continuing to provide a hot meal on Wednesdays and groceries to anyone who comes to the food pantry. By continuing our regular services, we contribute to a greater sense of calm among some of the most vulnerable people in North Brooklyn.  Because of our work, people who do not have food, or cannot afford it, do not have to resort to extreme measures out of fear of not having food to eat.

2. We are helping people who receive SNAP benefits (aka Food Stamps) apply for replacement benefits due to the storm. This can be a complicated process for folks who do not have a computer or fax machine. We are printing out the forms, helping people complete them properly, and faxing them to the HRA office. This allows people to receive replacement food stamps quickly, without having to walk to the HRA office, which is several miles away.

3. We are making portable meals for people staying at the shelter in Coney Island. We prepare the food here, and our city councilman Steven Levin is delivering the food to the shelter with his car, which has gasoline (a very precious resource right now).

We need your help! Please donate to the hunger program. We promise to use your funds wisely. You can make a one-time donation via PayPal at  or you can sign up to give monthly. If you’re not into online giving, you can send a check to: Greenpoint Church Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry 136 Milton St.  Brooklyn, NY 11222.

Thank you for your support of this important work and such a crucial time.

Yours,
Ann Kansfield

Note: There are other food banks and soup pantries in North Brooklyn that need your support—click here for a list. The guy who runs the one at the Church of the Transfiguration is really awesome, a former priest who is now married and has kids, he is so kind and nice.

I will be back in NYC Saturday, finally, and going to Red Hook to volunteer with the Red Hook Initiative—a grassroots group that has been working in the community for years. If you have stuff to donate and can’t get to Red Hook, but you can get to my house, I will get it there. Right now they are asking for cleaning masks, cleaning supplies (this includes mops, buckets, sponges, cleanser, baking soda, vinegar, etc.), flashlights, lanterns, batteries, candles, flashlights, and pet supplies.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is what you get when you stand up to a man who beats his young girlfriend in public. Not the black eye, not the broken nose, but the sense of being a fucking great human being.

Earlier today while I was waiting for the bus I witnessed a man walk up to his girlfriend, who couldn’t have been older than 18, kick her handbag, spit on her and scream in her face that she was a cunt. He walked back into the bus shelter after telling her she was worthless and pathetic and kicking her in the gut then as she tried to follow he turned around to grab her. I got in between them and told him that he should never EVER spit on a woman, hit her or talk to her in that way. He laughed in my face and said he would “fuck me up”. I looked him square in the eye and told him that I was not afraid of him. He proceeded to scream obscenities at her as I took her away from him, then he shouted to me that he could walk round the corner to get people to kill me. Feeling defiant, I said “go on, I dare you, there’re plenty of people around to witness it.” The prick then walked right up to me and head butted me in the nose. I am now sporting a swollen face and the beginnings of a black eye but the police took swabs from my nose to get his DNA and they know exactly who he is. Cunt’s going down for assault. Motherfuckers don’t treat women like that and get away with it. I feel heroic.

That’s right bitches. Women deserve respect.

For all those who can do this - but don’t always feel you have to go this route if you that isn’t your way. Anonymous calls to the police if you hear fights next door. A poster campaign, whatever you can do.

Reblogging for commentary—but also noting the original post was not prescriptive.

I’ve always loved this song, and the video—it just seems like they all really *like* each other. Would two groups do this together now?

"Freaky" is so often just masked cultural appropriation

garconniere:

virulentflowers:

So the new Die Antwoord video seriously has Yo-Landi in full blackface and throwing around racial slurs like she’s not a whitey standing on colonized land.  Super “freaky,” right?

It’s disheartening how queers will back straight, white artists as long as they present some “freaky” aesthetic.  I’ve already written about Grimes and how frustrated I am that queers constitute her most rabid fanbase, despite the fact that she utilizes highly-problematic cultural appropriation under the guise of being “weird.”

We’re a target market and these artists and the business interests that back them profit from mining the queer subculture for signifiers to get us to latch on to the art of straight cis white artists (Madonna=Lady Gaga=Grimes).  When you are putting your interests with artists who are essentially a minstrel show, you cannot create subcultural spaces that actively confront racism, heterosexism, cissexism, and capitalism.

What we’re moving toward is the same ironic disconnect we’ve criticized hipsters for.  We replace materially confronting/destroying the structures of domination with extracting the most superficial aesthetics from actual revolutionary struggles.  We substitute a recognition of how fucked things are with an aloof commodity fetishism.

Can we stop with the idolization any conventionally attractive, straight, white, cis “artist” whose emptiness is apparent when you strip away the artifice of “weirdness?”  Can we support artists whose voices are excluded from the dominant queer subcultural hierarchy, and who confront the “art as business” model?  With the amount of confrontational, anti-capitalist queer cultural production happening, the funneling of our money, time, and support into these business people masquerading as artists is unjustifiable.

I’m sick of talking about teen culture while people are dying and I’m sick of tolerating artists who dress up as the corpses.
