Volunteer Opportunities at NYC Parks tomorrow

(Note: I personally definitely feel that helping with food, water, electricity, shelter should be everyone’s priority. I urge you to look here for ways to help. But I know that for some folks it’s not possible to do certain types of work, for whatever reason, and parks are important and beneficial, especially with a lot of people who’ve been stuck inside with kids for long periods of time lately.)

transhistorical:

Marsha P. Johnson

Pronouns: She/her

  1. This pioneer was a notable transgender rights activist and popular figure in New York City’s gay and art scene, as well as one of the city’s best known trans women of the times. She was a leader in clashes with the police amid the Stonewall Riots.
  2. She was a co-founder, along with Sylvia Rivera, of Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (S.T.A.R.) in the 1970s, and also the “mother” of S.T.A.R. House along with Sylvia, getting together food and clothing to help support the young trans women living in the house on the lower East Side of New York.
  3. Once, appearing in a court the judge asked Marsha, “What does the ‘P’ stand for?”, Johnson gave her customary response “Pay it No Mind.” This phrase became her trademark.
  4. In July 1992, her body was found floating in the Hudson River, shortly after the 1992 Pride March. Police ruled the death a suicide, but her friends and supporters denied this, and a people’s postering campaign later declared that Johnson had earlier been harassed near the spot where her body was found. Attempts to get the police to investigate the cause of death were unsuccessful.

What a gorgeous lady! I love her dress too<—I know NOT THE POINT but want to just honor that part of her.

“Why did so many white women vote for Romney despite his shift to the right on women’s issues during the G.O.P. primaries? One way to tackle this question is to ask why so many white men voted for him. Surely, many of the same factors that motivated white male Romney supporters played into the decision-making of white female Romney supporters. After all, in many cases, the members of the two groups are married to each other, and are shaped by the same cultural and economic environment.”

Why White Women Voted for Romney : The New Yorker

56% of white women voted for Romney, 42% for Obama.

“it cannot be taken lightly that white men are in control of the record industry as a whole (even with a few black entrepreneurs), and control what images get played. young white suburban males are the largest consumers of hip hop music. so performance of black masculinity (or black sexuality as a whole) is created by white men for white men. and since white men have always portrayed black men as sexually dangerous and black women as always sexually available (and sexual violence against black women is rarely taken seriously), simplistic representations of black sexuality as hyper-heterosexual are important to maintaining white supremacy and patriarchy, and control of black bodies.”

And don’t forget the white male music critics in this situation.

deepomega replied to your photo: I don’t want to hear my fellow white feminists…

If you break it down further, single white women had a HUGE obama swing. The Romneys came from married white women.

There are so many more married women voting than single women voting that I think this distinction isn’t very useful.

Omg look at his Twitter. Talking cat. Is he allowed to spread that around??

If I ever met him, I would die, obviously but through the tears and from the afterlife, I would only address him as “Salem.”

I don’t want to hear my fellow white feminists talking…

I don’t want to hear my fellow white feminists talking about how “We did it” or how “The women’s vote helped Obama” because white women weren’t for Obama, as a group. He was reelected by WOC, straight up.
