farahjoon:

not going to waste any time reblogging this because I want to enjoy my Sunday night, but seriously? like, Andy Warhol was a piece of shit who exploited a lot of people. also, have you even read SCUM? I would rather see folks unpack and problematize SCUM than waste life reading/talking about bourgie excrement like The Feminine Mystique.

before I go, I just wanna say that one of the things I secretly love about the writings of Valerie Solanas is how they very brashly and unapologetically pit women against each other. we need to talk about this. we need to talk about girl-hate. we need to talk about the fictions of solidarity. all of these things are so important — we must learn to look these monsters in the eye and embrace the fuck out of them.

My friend Laurie actually moved back to PV and her kids play soccer in the same field we used to. IT CAN GET VERY FOGGY THERE.

Rockist Science

QUESTION: Does it bother you when female musicians get away with receiving so much help in terms of production/song writing? It’s a fact that there are significantly less female musicians who completely produce all of their own tracks. Whereas most male producers do everything themselves.

ANSWER:  no. i think you see fewer female producers because we live in a patriarchal society that conditions women to think that they can’t produce or make music legitimately without a male helping them. it’s not that female performers just automatically enjoy the benefit of a bunch of people wanting to do all the work for them, it’s that no one will take them seriously as producers or songwriters or artists. whenever anyone asks a girl to be involved in some kind of musical project, it’s almost always to sing or perform and be “eye candy” or whatever. the idea that women can play instruments, produce, and write songs as well as men is an idea that the industry and, imo, the record buying public in general is still being very slow to accept.

ANALYSIS:  Grimesz’s boyfriend is pretty cool. (His first concert was Lilith Fair ‘98!)

Thank you everyone who has sent nice notes and replies about John. It is lonely and weird to be here in NYC with everyone gathering at home. Last night I was telling someone that at the last show I went to in LA—at Jabberjaw of course—I was like, I can’t bear it here any more, I feel burdened by all of this history, I can’t talk to anyone without both of our pasts and the indecent knowledge we have of one another sucking me into oblivion. And then the first time I went to a show here, I was like, I have not been to a show where I didn’t know anyone since high school, who are these people, and it was terrifying. I’m still glad I came, I’m still glad I’m here, but I miss my punk family.
