We’ve all gotten so good at protecting ourselves from demons.
According to the text of the Madrid manuscript of the “Synopsis historion,” a Byzantine chronicle written by John Skylitzes, “There were some Varangians dispersed in the Thrakesion theme for the winter. One of them coming across a woman of the region in the wilderness put the quality of her virtue to the test. When persuasion failed he resorted to violence, but she seized his Persian-type sword, struck him in the heart and promptly killed him. When the deed became known in the surrounding area, the Varangians held an assembly and crowned the woman, presenting her with all the possessions of her violator, whom they threw aside, unburied, according to the law concerning assassins.” In the image depicting these occurrences, the woman uses a spear to kill her attacker, and the other Varangian men approach her with armfuls of clothing.
We’re actually the first generation that is more likely to die before our parents due to depression and suicide.

“Our biggest aim is to let rapists know: If you guys do this, we will see you. And we are going to make sure everyone else does too.”
I interviewed KY Anonymous, one of the people responsible for bringing the Steubenville rape case to light, for the July issue. KY and his crew exposed the videos and images that the football coach and the cops tried to suppress, identified the conflicts of interest between the school administration and the DA, helped keep Jane Doe’s name out of the press (something the government failed to do TWICE), and were a visible force of support for this rape survivor every single day.
The FBI raided Ky’s house with a SWAT team and a battering ram, handcuffed his family while the executed a search during with the officers had their names and badge numbers hidden, and now are threatening to bring him up on charges that could carry 10 years in jail and more than $200,000 in fines.
The only two of Jane Doe’s attackers who were prosecuted were allowed to turn themselves in. They were sentenced to one and two years in jail, respectively. Everyone else involved—the many students who photographed and recorded the assault and freely shared the images on social media; the football coach who boasted on Twitter that he had “handled it”—successfully covered up the fact that his players raped a young girl repeatedly,
What kind of message does this send to survivors and to whistleblowers? That the government protects rapists and goes after their supporters?
You can read KY’s account of what happened here.
