"Even the most sex-positive feminists are quick to dismiss Kim for the way in which she rose to…"

Even the most sex-positive feminists are quick to dismiss Kim for the way in which she rose to public consciousness. It brings to mind the flawed and damaging Tina Fey version of feminism, in which only some women – those who are educated, driven, undamaged, well-spoken and tattoo-less – are deserving of our support. Let your boyfriend film you having sex in your early 20s and have the results distributed against your wishes five years later? Sorry, you don’t fit the requirements to join our club and you’ll soon get what’s coming to you.

The fact that she posted selfies to Instagram following her demand for respite from paparazzi was all the gossip rags needed to deem her point moot. This situations falls into the larger issue of Kim’s control of her image. Sure, she allows a camera crew to film her life and that of her family; sure, she broadcast her second wedding on TV for millions to see; sure, she is active on social media and takes pictures of herself constantly. But she’s in control of those images. The fact that Kim takes iPhone snaps of herself and appears in photoshoots for brands and magazines does not negate her need for privacy. These acts are not comparable to those committed by paparazzi. She is rarely seen without make-up and opulent outfits on camera, because her image is her livelihood. When that is threatened, she is allowed to be angry.

sherloakenshield: “The Impala, of course, has all the things…

sherloakenshield:

“The Impala, of course, has all the things other cars have… and a few things they don’t. But none of that stuff’s important. This is the stuff that’s important. The army man that Sam crammed in the ashtray - it’s still stuck there. The Legos that Dean shoved into the vents — to this day, heat comes on and they can hear ‘em rattle. These are the things that make the car theirs — really theirs. Even when Dean rebuilt her from the ground up, he made sure all these little things stayed, ‘cause it’s the blemishes that make her beautiful.” - Chuck, Supernatural 5.22 ‘Swan Song’

THAT’S WHAT MAKES HER BEAUTIFUL

wandatinasky:

the great gatsby is, at its heart, a novel about class and identity. the unlikely protagonist, an abnormally large cicada exoskeleton that is both physically and morally inert, serves as a surface for the supporting characters’ projections of themselves. in this paper, i will discuss how cool bugs are, why i wish i had an exoskeleton, and whether or not the F in F Scott Fitzgerald actually stood for “fuck”. in the first paragraph, i will establish that bugs are really fucking cool. in the following paragraph, i will argue that an exoskeleton is preferable to an endoskeleton because you can monitor its actions more carefully and ensure that it is not planning to rebel against you. the final paragraph will consist of the phrase “Fuck Scott Fucksgerald” repeated for one full double-spaced page.

Saw the amazing After Tiller movie yesterday—documentary about…

Saw the amazing After Tiller movie yesterday—documentary about the 4 doctors who still perform late-term abortions in the US and are public about it. It’s a deeply personal, intimate film where you see patients and doctors struggle with the moral complexities of every decision, guided by their deep belief that women have the right to choose their destiny and to do what they believe will be the best outcome for their pregnancy. And they do this while under incredible pressure from terrorists, abusers, and assassins who harass and stalk them at every turn.

I’m so proud that the Sarah Jacobson Film Grant was able to support the completion of this film and I urge all of you to sign up for their mailing list so you can see it when it comes to your town.

(I’m going to disagree with Lana a bit here, I wuoldn’t say Tiller was “vilified by most of the country," he was vilified by right wing extremists who eventually murdered him.)
