"Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Liam Payne have always insisted:…"

Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Liam Payne have always insisted: Directioners are not crazy—and they’re not to be ignored. In interview after interview over the past three years, usually surrounded by thousands of screaming young women, the band has politely corrected reporters who characterize their followers as “insane” or “deranged.” “We prefer ‘passionate,’” they’ll demur. “Or ‘dedicated.’”

There’s more to this than semantics. Possibly you don’t realize how radical it is to see five guys treat young women with respect, and to demand that others do so as well, but it is. In a world where “fangirl” and “groupie” are routinely used to put down women who are enthusiastic about anything, One Direction stands in shocking contrast to their peers and to the culture as a whole.

Women need to make their own spaces as fans in a culture where most media ignores, sexualizes, trivializes, or attacks them—particularly women of color. Women control the budgets of fandom, buying 80% of sports clothing, and nearly 2/3rds of all books; women account for the majority of spending online; women are more likely to share and create online. The majority of fan fiction is written by women, putting ourselves and our stories into the worlds that we love. We change worlds, or try to, so that we can be heard. We scream and cry sometimes when we love things, like loving five guys who listen to us. But we’re not crazy—we’re just excited.

Oh Those “Crazy” One Direction Fans by Mikki Halpin (via genderblinditem)

Reblogging because these great quotes today:

Harry:

"I think at that age you are passionate about everything. [If] you remember your first girlfriend at school when you’re 13, you convince yourself that you love her. I think looking in, not everyone can understand it but to that girl or that boy it might be the most important thing in the world. Just because you don’t understand it, doesn’t mean you can say it’s crazy."

Liam:

"They are so dedicated…our fans put us where we are. I don’t think it’s something that should be taken as a negative, I think passion’s good in any form."

lookerlooker:

mikkipedia reminded me that colman pool exists and so today i took the eleven year old boy i’ve been babysitting to go swimming there because he starts school on wednesday. he has autism so it was a little stressful to do the swim test and they wouldn’t let me take him with me into the women’s locker room (no children of the opposite gender over the age of six allowed) so we had to change in their first aid room where there was a cot and a lot of aloe gel. but once we were changed and cleared to swim, it was so nice! you can float and look up at the pine trees or out at the ocean. it started raining so everyone left but us and maybe two other people and he had the time of his life going down the slide over and over and over again. the co-op i worked at this summer was also in west seattle; i’m a little bit in love.

This is beautiful!!! West Seattle has so many things I love: Colman, Feedback Lounge, Alki Beach, Walker Rock Garden….. thank you for going and posting about it xoxoxoxo

"The communication between two humans concerning their hopes, ideas and their plights is what allows them to bond in resistance against a system that affects everyone in many different ways," says Colorado prisoner Rachel Galindo (in a letter published in Resistance Behind Bars). Join our Bluestockings-based group committed to communication and resistance by writing to prisoners. We’ll be focusing on folks who tend to receive less attention and mail, including LGBTQI-identified prisoners, women, and youth. Pens, paper, writing guidelines and encouragement will all be provided!

“I learned to read on [Sherlock Holmes], and that book changed my life. I never knew you could live in your head this way, and the idea of this guy who, through his intelligence and his powers of observation, could make sense of the world. That was like a fantasy of consolation. I was like, Damn, I wish I could make sense of my world just by paying attention.”

I’m obsessed with Colman Pool in West Seattle. There are captions on the photos for a little more info. It’s a salt water pool at the tip of West Seattle, located in a National Park. It is Heaven, you walk through the forest to get there.
