TRIGGER WARNING: a revenge poem

travelcoat:

MEN TAKE EVERYTHING
MEN CAN TAKE
EVERYTHING, FETISHIZE
EVERYTHING THEY CAN TAKE, MEN DO
TAKE EVERYTHING

CAN SAY,
“I wanted
to be the beautiful
woman
victim who
cries”
CAN SAY
“I wanted
to explore
the OTHER”
CAN SAY
“Being a victim
has its benefits”
BECAUSE THE OPPRESSED,
THE OTHERS, THE WE,
WE THE VICTIMS HAVE
OUR COMMUNITIES
OF OTHER
VICTIMS

Chorus:
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA AHA HA HA HAHAHAHA HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA AHHHHHH AHHHHAAHHH HAAAH HAAAAHHHHAAA

MEN can like us best
when we are sad
AND DEGRADED
Because our sadness
makes us more “HUMAN”
and “RELATABLE”

MERYL STREEP renders our
sadness “HUMAN”
and”RELATABLE”

which is a sneaky way
to really say
“I DON’T KNOW HOW
TO SEE YOU
AS HUMAN
IN ANY OTHER STATE”
and
“ACTUALLY
YOU’RE STILL
NOT HUMAN”

Men can say
“Women are more
interesting because
they are more
constructed”

“YOU CAN DO MORE
WITH THEIR HAIR
AND MAKE UP
BUT MAYBE
I ONLY
THINK THAT
BECAUSE
I AM A MAN.”

Chorus:
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA AHA HA HA HAHAHAHA HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA AHHHHHH AHHHHAAHHH HAAAH HAAAAHHHHAAA

Jane can’t even cry without feeling sick:
I can’t even cry
without feeling
sick—you take
EVERYTHING

and I am beautiful
and other in my tears

Meanwhile your
mostly white
upper middle class
audience will continue
to kiss your ass

will forever kiss
your ass because
the art world
loves an “edgy”
white man
who vampirizes
the suffering
of Others.

Chorus:
What a Radical Never Before Seen Performance! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA AHA HA HA HAHAHAHA HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA AHHHHHH AHHHHAAHHH HAAAH HAAAAHHHHAAA AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

My Lovely Expression of COMMUNITY,

dorightwoman:

he slowly said “rapeculture…?” after hearing someone use the phrase. surprised that he hadn’t encountered it before, i explained the term refers to seemingly trivial remarks and acts that legitimize the domination (rape) of women.

he still seemed confused so i said you know how there’s this internet term called friend-zoning? and he knew what that meant. i said, well some people think that it buttresses rape culture by implying that women owe sex to men who act friendly to them. and then he said he sees the friend zone as an inescapable morass of sexlessness. i said that’s kind of my point, that you see women’s friendship as an inescapable morass.

and then a female colleague chimed in that the friend zone posits that women’s behavior is essentially predictable. and he said something about stereotypes being bad, but women in his experience are just that - predictable. and i recommended never saying that to a women. then i wrote down ”for colored girls by ntozake shange” on a piece of paper and handing it to him i said read the poem latent rapists

also what are the politics of continuing to document my male colleagues’ talk about women? these are phd students at a top-20 program. they will get jobs as professors.

possible hashtags for this project include #laughing at men #misogynists earning phds and #calling out colleagues

is anyone even interested in these posts? am i creating accountability? or am i just letting off steam? can someone please theorize this for me?

Professionalize your grudges. Use spite to fuel your ambitions.

There was an awesome guy on the radio this morning talking about how politicians don’t bother to answer the questions they are asked in debates (nor in interviews, as we know). He calls it a PIVOT and did a bunch of studies on it and how “politicians exploit our cognitive limitations.” Obviously I thought this was an achievement on numerous levels.

This led Rogers to the conclusion that people are capable of detecting dodges — but only if they’re egregious. They don’t seem capable of detecting subtle evasions.

Rogers believes this is because we have limited attention, and most of the time when we’re watching debates, we spend that attention on social evaluation — Do we like this person? Do we trust this person? — and only generally monitor content.

It’s only when the speaker is wildly inconsistent that some deep mental wire is tripped. “It raises some flags, and we direct our limited attention to assessing whether this person is doing something unusual by failing to answer the question and offering an egregiously different answer,” Rogers says.

This, Rogers believes, is why politicians can get away with dodging questions as much as 70 percent of the time.

“Politicians,” he says, “are exploiting our cognitive limitation without punishment.”
